Historic Newfound Lake Colonial: A Story of Heritage and Hospitality
Preserving Character: Historic Home Interior Design at Newfound Lake
A charming garden path leads to this peaceful screened porch getaway
When long-time clients ask me to take on a project, I know two things: first, they trust me completely, and second, I’m about to dive into something special.
The historic Newfound Lake Colonial was no exception. Located across from the Newfound Lake Audubon Society in New Hampshire, this home had a history worth celebrating, and my clients—avid travelers but first-time historic home buyers—wanted to bring fresh energy to the space while honoring its past.
Although they had no experience running a bed and breakfast, they understood the importance of making guests feel welcome. That’s where I came in—to bridge the gap between heritage and hospitality, creating an environment that felt as warm and inviting as the lake itself.
Designing with Storytelling in Mind
With every project, I look for the thread that ties the design together. In this case, the home’s location and history were that thread. We named each room after special places in and around Newfound Lake, allowing guests to connect with the region before even stepping outside. It was a simple but meaningful way to celebrate the home’s roots.
Beyond the storytelling, we took a thoughtful approach to the interiors. My clients love antiques, and so do I—so this project gave me a chance to repurpose cherished antiques while incorporating new elements to ensure the space felt fresh and functional. We balanced timeless pieces with modern comforts, creating a seamless blend of old and new.

The Bold Red Room: A Lesson in Trust
One of my favorite parts of this project? The red bedroom.
Color is powerful, and I knew this particular shade of deep, rich red would bring warmth and drama to the space. The painter, however, wasn’t so sure. After the first coat, he called me and said, "It’s VERY red. I figured I’d give you a chance to change it."
Before I could respond, my client—who has worked on multiple projects with me—jumped in. “I’ve done many projects with Kacey. If she says stay with the red, we will stay with the red. I trust her.”
That’s the kind of relationship I strive for with my clients. Trust is everything in design. When you trust the process, you end up with something extraordinary. And guess what? That bold, beautiful red became one of their favorite spaces in the entire house.

A Historic home INTERIOR DESIGN with Heart
When we finished, the house had transformed into a welcoming retreat, steeped in history yet designed for modern comfort. Every space told a story, every antique had a purpose, and every guest who walked through the doors could feel the intention behind the design.
For me, the best part of any interior design project isn’t finishing—it’s seeing my clients fall in love with their homes again. In this case, it was about giving them confidence in their new role as innkeepers, knowing they had a space that was as inviting to others as it was to them.
